Using Online Activities to Improving Speaking Skills while Learning a Second Language

“The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow- Bill Gates. The use of internet has influenced the development of many skills on people, in some cases, students’ and teachers’ skills. The progress of their abilities has proven that Internet is an efficient tool at the time of developing skills such a second language skills. Technology makes learning accessible to students it gives them support through programs (as cited in Clark, 2013, p.11). Sharing information between classmates develops the speaking skills, the use of tools as internet facilitates efforts and the production of the language, and it motivates students to speak.

Sharing online information between classmates helps students to develop vocabulary. Social networking is a tool that allows them to do profiles and share information between them (Abbasova & Mammadova, 2016). Using online tools provides students’ ways of doing different activities where they can apply vocabulary seen during class. The words used with higher frequency provide learners more opportunity to acquire new vocabulary (Silvia & Otowinowska, 2018). Activities that ask students for sharing information using the vocabulary help learners to reinforce the new words because vocabulary is frequently used. Also, the activities could use technologies because it is meaningful for students the use of different ways while working on class.

The use of online tools facilitates teachers´ efforts to provide students with skills in order to produce the language. Technologies used with education purposes help students to improve communication skills (Kasapoglu-Akyol, 2010). Students may enjoy the development of different activities related to the use of technologies during the class time. Activities that involve the use of Internet help them to improve the speaking skills. Also, students may feel secure while sharing their ideas through different websites. When students practice using online tools, they feel comfortable while talking. In addition, they, may feel motivated if they have progressed.

The motivation of the students plays a principal role when acquiring a second language. Using technology into teaching helps students of the second language to acquire it, also, it motivates and gives them confidence (as cited in Slimane, 2017, p. 11). Students may feel fear of making mistakes, for this reason, the teacher should develop activities that provide confidence to students. When students feel enthusiastic about learning a language, they participate during the class time. It gives them more speaking practice and consequently they improve their speaking skills.

Students should use the Internet during the class time because it helps students to improve the speaking skills. The activities that the teacher uses could include the use of tools that facilitate the development of speaking, it also promotes the work of the students during the class time. The use of the internet provides students a way to develop different skills including speaking. It is common that students get afraid of speaking, but, when students use different tools as the internet, they may feel confident. Technologies create security and consequently, students feel free of speaking. Improving the speaking skill is a key when learning a language.
